Short answer
Which is better: Standard Shopping or Performance Max?
Neither campaign type is automatically better. Standard Shopping often fits when you want more explicit control over product groups and bidding with a focused product-ad setup. Performance Max fits when you have clear conversion goals, reliable values and useful creative, and want access to Google’s wider advertising inventory. A controlled test is more useful than a universal recommendation.
Standard Shopping and Performance Max compared
| Factor | Standard Shopping | Performance Max |
|---|---|---|
| Reach | Focused on Shopping ads and supported product-led formats. | Can use Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps from one campaign. |
| Bidding | Supports automated strategies and manual CPC control, depending on the objective. | Uses Smart Bidding for conversions or conversion value, with optional CPA or ROAS targets. |
| Inputs | Merchant Center feed, product groups, campaign settings and bids. | Conversion goals and values, feed, creative, audience signals and campaign controls. |
| Control | More explicit decisions around product groups, campaign splits and bids. | More automated allocation, with controls including goals, brand exclusions, negative keywords, search themes and URL settings. |
| Typical strength | Focused product testing and clearer control of individual ranges. | Cross-channel reach and automated optimisation towards a measurable goal. |
Standard Shopping
When Standard Shopping may fit
- You want more explicit control over product groups and bids.
- You are testing the feed, pricing or product ranges and need a focused baseline.
- Conversion data is still limited and you want to observe a narrower campaign first.
Performance Max
When Performance Max may fit
- Your conversion goals and values are set up reliably.
- You want reach across multiple Google channels beyond Shopping.
- You can supply a good feed plus relevant text, images and video.
Can both campaign types run together?
Yes. Google changed the previous automatic prioritisation of Performance Max over Standard Shopping when the same products are eligible. Ad Rank now determines which campaign serves. That makes a combined structure possible, but budgets, product splits and reporting still need to be designed carefully.
Running both does not automatically improve performance. If both cover the same products, goals and audiences without a clear test design, interpretation becomes unnecessarily difficult.
How to decide with real data
- Check measurement: Purchases, revenue values, consent and conversion delay need to be reliable.
- Define the products: Decide which ranges, margins or bestsellers the test will cover.
- Build a fair comparison: Goals, ROAS targets, budgets, locations and timing need to be meaningfully comparable.
- Use Google’s experiment: When the account is eligible, a Standard Shopping versus Performance Max experiment can structure the decision.
- Judge commercial value: Compare more than ROAS, including margin, new-customer value, order quality and stock position.
